To help raise funds for the renovations and improvements to the War Memorial, we have written and produced a Roll of Honour covering all the men of both world wars, linked to Wickford and Runwell, who made the supreme sacrifice. Details include pictures (where possible), newspaper quotes, brief civilian life details, service life and details of the action that they were lost in, photos of commemoration or place of burial (with a few exceptions such as those buried in Iraq or Burma). The book also sets the scene by looking at the effects of war on a small English town. A book listing the local men who lost their lives while serving for their country
in WWI & II is currently being compiled by Steve Newman.
Under the section "The Soldiers" you
will find all the names that will be included*, a short description and whether
we have a photograph of the soldier in question.
The book will include this information, plus additional information about where the soldier served etc, how he died and newspaper quotes from the time. Steve is of course looking to collect as much information as possible for each of the chaps, and once the project with raising money for the memorial is completed, all the information from the book will be available on this website as a lasting tribute, so please if you have any further details on any of the soldiers listed get in touch with us!
By the end of 2006 the Roll of Honour book will be available and every penny from that will go into the fund.
It is being privately published so that we can ensure 100% will go directly towards the project. So please pop back and buy a copy!
